Santa Anita: Opening Day Attendance Tops 40,000, Down Slightly From 2016

An on-track crowd of over 40,000 – 40,723 to be exact – attended the opening day of Santa Anita’s winter-spring meeting, according to a report in the Daily Racing Form.

Tuesday’s opening day card drew $17,279,161 in all-sources wagering. Tuesday featured four graded stakes races including the both the G1 La Brea and Malibu.

The Daily Racing Form reported that a crowd of 46,514 witnessed the opening day card last year, while the 2016 opening day all-sources handle was also a bit higher at $18,363,495. Opening day was on a Monday in 2016.

Racing will resume Friday and continue through the holiday weekend until January 1.
